Traffic on London roads getting worse

New data has revealed that traffic on London roads has got worse with the capital now ranked the sixth most congested city in the world.

According to the latest TomTom Traffic Index, drivers spend an average of 109 hours a year stuck in rush-hour traffic.

It also found that traffic flow through London got worse from 2023 to 2024, with average speeds falling to 11.2 mph and an average six-mile journey increasing to more than 32 minutes.

The research identified Lima as the most congested city in the world, with 150 hours lost each year in traffic jams. Drivers in Dublin also wasted 150 hours each year in rush-hour traffic, followed by Davao City in the Philippines (131 hours), Barranquilla in Colombia (126 hours), and Bengaluru in India (113 hours).

The Index analysed data from 500 cities in 62 countries, ranking them based on average travel time and congestion levels.

Significant strain

Ralf-Peter Schäfer, vice president of Traffic, TomTom, said: “The combination of population and economic growth is putting significant strain on our transportation networks. “Outdated infrastructure and inefficient road planning fail to keep pace with demand.

“Additionally, the surge in ecommerce has led to a rise in freight traffic, further complicating the situation. Without a shift towards more regulation and sustainable transportation options, we risk worsening congestion that impacts everyone in our cities.”
