Speeding offences up nine per cent in a year

The number of speeding offences in the UK increased by nine per cent from 2023 to 2024.

Government figures published in the Police Powers and Procedures report have revealed that 2,536,194 speed offences were detected in 2024, the highest number since comparable records began in 2011.

Meanwhile, speeding offences accounted for 86% of all motoring offences recorded in the year, the same proportion as in 2023.

The data also found that 51% of driving offences resulted in driver retraining, with 37% receiving a fixed penalty notice.

Renewed thinking

William Porter, policy and public affairs manager at IAM RoadSmart said: “With speeding offences now at the highest level since 2011, it’s clear we need renewed thinking to help reverse this dangerous trend.

“On average, these statistics show that more than 6,800 people are caught speeding every day which reflects widespread disregard for limits and puts lives at risk. We need a renewed focus on enforcement, education, and driver behaviour.

“Without decisive intervention, we risk normalising dangerous driving habits that have devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities.”
