Soft Bicycle 360 developed to improve cyclist safety
AB Dynamics has developed the Soft Bicycle 360 to support Euro NCAP as it steps up tests around cyclist safety on the roads.
Developed in conjunction with sister company DRI, the Soft Bicycle 360 which has now been approved to use in official Euro NCAP testing.
The Soft Bicycle 360 has been developed using materials to generate radar reflectivity, improving ADAS accuracy during testing, while a rubberised material makes it 30% lighter than comparable targets and less damaging to vehicles being tested.
It also features a single-piece frame architecture that eliminates the need for time-consuming rebuilds after impact, while the rider’s legs, arms and torso are made from lightweight foam material for added durability.
Cyclist safety
Dr Andrew Pick, business director, Track Test Systems at AB Dynamics, said: “Cyclist safety is increasingly under the spotlight as they represent a growing share of road fatalities in the EU.
“To combat this, Euro NCAP has recently increased the number of test scenarios involving a cyclist for both the passenger vehicle and HGV programmes. As these scenarios become more complex and demanding, the industry needs test objects that are both realistic and robust. That’s why it is great to have the Soft Bicycle 360 approved by Euro NCAP, so we can help contribute to improved safety. for cyclists.”
