New car sales down despite EV growth

New car sales fell by 3.9% in the EU in January, according to new figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

The decline was driven largely by falling demand for petrol and diesel models, with petrol car registrations dropping by 28.2% in a year to 175,989 units and a 22% share of the market, while diesel sales fell by 22% to just an eight per cent market share.

However, electric vehicle registrations rose from a 14.9% share of the market to 19.3% with 154,230 sales, while hybrid sales increased to 308,364 units, which represented 38.6% of the total EU market.

The data also found that plug-in-hybrid sales rose to 78,741 units last month to make up 9.8% of the market compared to 7.4% in January last year.
