Falling new car sales in the EU propped up by EVs
New car sales in the EU fell by 1.2% in February year-on-year, according to new figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
Electric car sales rose to 312,369 units, which equals to an 18.8% market share, while hybrid registrations increased to 643,898 units, accounting for a 38.7% share of the total EU market.
Plug-in hybrid sales also grew year-on-year, up to 162,751 units and a 9.8% market share.
Against this, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 30.6% from 38.7% over the same period in 2025.
Petrol car registrations dropped by 23.3% with 374,774 new cars registered the last two months, with its market share falling from 29% this time last year to 22.5%, while diesel sales made up just 8.1% of the total after registrations fell a further 17.7%.
