European car sales boosted by electric charge
European car sales rose to 1.4 million units in June, making it the strongest month of the year to date.
According to data from Jato Dynamics, this is a 13% year-on-year increase, with the majority of growth coming from electrified powertrains.
It found that electric registrations rose 50.7% to 359,300 units, accounting for 25.7% of the total market.
Plug-in hybrids and hybrids also recorded strong growth, up 24.2% and 24.1% respectively to 146,900 and 185,600.
Meanwhile, petrol and diesel sales continued their downward trend, falling 13.6% year on year to 378.500 units.

Steffen Michulski, regional consultant Europe at JATO Dynamics, said: “June 2026 demonstrated how quickly the centre of gravity in the European market is shifting towards electrification. BEVs delivered their strongest volume performance of the year so far, surpassing one quarter of all registrations and clearly becoming the market’s main growth driver.
“At the same time, the transition remains multi-speed. While BEVs are leading in the most mature markets, hybrids and plug-in hybrids continue to play an important role. The common trend, however, is clear: electrified vehicles are gaining share across the region, while conventional combustion powertrains continue to retreat.”
