Electric vehicle drivers give charging the thumbs up
New research has revealed that electric vehicle drivers are finding the charging experience easier than expected.
However, it found that the reality varies significantly depending on whether motorists can charge at home.
A survey commissioned by temporary car insurance experts Tempcover identified a clear divide between homeowners and renters.
While 85% of all electric vehicle owners said that charging was ‘easy’, the figure rose to 89% among homeowners but dropped to 72% for renters.
Further, 18% of renters said they use a public charging station daily compared to just nine per cent of homeowners, with 29% saying they frequently face challenges finding an available charger due to the charger being occupied (34%), too expensive (34%), or out of order (29%).
Claire Wills-McKissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, said: “Those who rely most on the public charging network are among the most optimistic about the future, suggesting that regular experience of public infrastructure may be building rather than denting confidence in what’s coming.
“What the data does show is that the experience of electric vehicle ownership can look quite different depending on your housing situation. Renters are making it work, but often have to navigate more hurdles to get there, and closing that gap will be key to making the electric vehicle transition work for everyone.
