Demand surges for newer used alternative fuel vehicles
Average prices of used alternative fuel vehicles rose 65% from January to February as demand for newer models surged.
According to data from Dealer Auction’s EV Performance Review for February, average sold prices of alternative fuel vehicles increased to £16,717, while average mileage dropped from 66,300 miles in January to 33,495 miles.
Demand is also being driven by growing consumer confidence in battery life, with the Generational 2025 Battery Performance Index finding that age and mileage have less impact on battery deterioration than many believed.
Its research revealed that batteries of even eight and nine-year-old electric vehicles retained an 85% state of health, while electric vehicles with more than 100,000 miles frequently return 88%–95% battery health.
Impressive margins
Dealer Auction marketplace director Kieran TeeBoon said: “It’s brilliant to see these young AFVs commanding such impressive margins. The pandemic-era supply gap leaves space for AFVs to grow and 2026 could be a pivotal year for hybrid and EV models aged four to six years old.”
He added: “With growing, positive research into the used EV market and continued large-scale investment in charging infrastructure, production, equipment and specialist skills in key areas of automotive influence, it will be interesting to see how consumer confidence evolves in response.”
