Average repair costs hit five-year high
Average repair costs have increased by 26% since 2021 to £597, according to data released by Bumper.
Analysis carried out by AutoBI, Bumper’s business intelligence division, found that average repair costs were £473.33 in 2021, £512.35 in 2022, £550.13 in 2023 and £584.92 in 2024.
The data also found that further critical work was not authorised by drivers due to cost pressures. Among those who did not approve urgent work, 46% said they couldn’t afford it while 33% said the repair was already too expensive.
Meanwhile, 21% have skipped scheduled services to save on costs while 38% of motorists have delayed recommended work.
Cost is critical
Jack Allman, chief commercial officer at co-founder at Bumper, said: “Cost is still a critical decision factor for motorists and it’s worrying that so many drivers are having to leave urgent repairs unfinished because of affordability concerns.
“These figures underline the need for greater support to help drivers manage repair costs and get back on the road as swiftly and safely as possible.
“Dealerships must continue to balance competitive pricing with value-led propositions, transparent cost structures and flexible payment options to help drivers say yes to necessary work.”
