Autotech Connect calls for SERMI safeguards
Autotech Connect has urged bodyshops to take key steps around skills and security to ensure it they are ready to take advantage of SERMI.
SERMI (the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information) is being introduced to allow certified repairers access to key security-critical vehicle data which will enable them to compete with dealerships and approved networks.
The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has now established a single route to certification, but Autotech Connect has warned that accreditation comes with new responsibilities.
It said that access to security-related vehicle data brings risk as modern vehicles are software-driven and connected. This means bodyshops seeking SERMI certification need to prioritise cyber security, as weak or vulnerable systems could expose customer data, enable key cloning or create wider security risks.
Security-critical repairs
Meanwhile, security-critical repairs demand advanced diagnostics, software competence and confidence working within manufacturer platforms. Autotech Connect fears that, with skills shortages already affecting the aftermarket, there is a real risk that some businesses will gain access to data but struggle to use it efficiently or safely.
Laurence Abbott, chief technology officer at Autotech Connect, said: “SERMI is an important step forward for independent garages, but access to data is only part of the picture. Garages also need the right cyber safeguards, processes and technician capability in place.
“The businesses that take a joined-up approach now will be in a stronger position as vehicle security systems continue to evolve.”
