Apprentices take part in IMI Skills Competition qualifiers

Apprentices from across the sector have been competing for a place in the IMI Skills Competition National Finals.

A total of 54 apprentices took part in the qualifiers which were jointly hosted at the Delphi Technologies Academy in Leamington Spa (Automotive Technology) and Eyebox Training & Conference Centre in Coventry (Automotive Body Repair and Automotive Refinishing).

A record number of entrants took part in online knowledge tests to secure a place in the qualifiers, with the six highest scorers from each category due to be announced on 9 July.

They will then progress to the National Finals in Cardiff this November, with age-eligible winners having opportunity to join Team UK at the WorldSkills International competition in Japan in 2028.

Incredible talent

Michael Massey, IMI skills competitions manager, said: “The 2026 national qualifiers showcased some incredible talent from across the industry, with competitors demonstrating exceptional passion, professionalism and technical skill. The assessments across all three disciplines have provided brilliant examples of the future of automotive skills in action.

“We look forward to announcing the finalists and welcoming these inspirational individuals to the live finals later in the year.”
