Young drivers warming to fully electric cars

A new annual study has found that nearly one in five young drivers expect their next car to be fully electric.

The research also found that more than half of this age group are open to buying a used fully-electric car in the future.

Kwik Fit’s annual survey revealed that 18% of motorists between 18 and 34 say their next purchase will be fully electric, with 42% of this group agreeing they offer better value than petrol or diesel models. This compares with just 11% of drivers over 55 who say they will go electric next, with only 18% of over 55s saying they would consider a used electric car.

Meanwhile, range anxiety has fallen from 41% to 37%, while concerns about access to fast chargers have gone down from 37% to 33%.

Dan Joyce, operations director at Kwik Fit, said: “This research reveals a multi-speed transition to electric vehicles which varies between age groups.

“The overall proportion of drivers planning to switch to low emissions for their next car has remained the same since last year. However, our study shows that younger drivers are much more open to moving to EVs and new car brands than many older drivers.

“It’s also interesting to see them much more willing to buy a used EV, especially as we are seeing more vehicles moving out of the fleet sector into private ownership.”
