Worst B and C roads in England and Wales revealed
New research has revealed the areas in England and Wales with the worst quality B and C roads.
According to data released by Go.Compare motorbike insurance, 11% of B and C roads in Westmorland and Furness were classed as being in red condition last year. This means they require immediate investigation to confirm if work is necessary.
A further 38% were classed as being in amber condition, meaning they could need repair soon.
Devon recorded the second highest volume of red B and C roads, with 10% in a poor condition. Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Kent, Oxfordshire and Somerset were joint third, each reporting eight per cent of roads in a red condition.
Devon (36%), Kent (33%), Herefordshire (32%) and Oxfordshire (32%) also placed among the places with the highest volume of amber roads.
The findings were based on data from the Department for Transport on road surface quality recorded using SCANNER technology.
Steve Ramsey, managing editor for motoring at Go.Compare, said:
“Poor quality road surfaces can damage vehicles and cause accidents so it’s essential that roads are properly maintained. Clearly, more work needs to be done on these roads so that they’re safe for all road users and can be explored with minimal risk.”
