Uninsured driving hotspots revealed by MIB
New data from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau has revealed the UK’s uninsured driving hotspots, with Thurrock in Essex topping the list.
The data also found that five of the top 15 hotspots were in the West Midlands, with Peterborough, Sandwell, Havering, Manchester and Belfast also in the top 10.
The news comes at the start of the annual Operation Drive Insured campaign, a week-long initiative led by MIB and police forces to remove uninsured vehicles from the road.
As part of the operation, police forces will leverage MIB data to carry out extra checks on motorists in problem areas. This includes Navigate, the central record of all active motor insurance policies, as well as ANPR cameras and predictive movements to narrow the expected movements of known uninsured vehicles.
Uninsured driving cost the UK £1bn a year, with one uninsured vehicle seized every four minutes and 120,000 seized so far this year.
MIB is committed to reducing uninsured driving as part of its five-year strategy, Accelerating to Zero, which combines enforcement with awareness around common insurance mistakes and uninsured driving consequences.
