UK’s worst drink driving regions revealed
New research has identified the UK’s worst regions for drink driving, with the North East named the biggest hotspot.
Go.Compare car insurance analysed the number of policies taken out by drivers with a drink driving conviction and found that one in every 226 policyholders in the North East had been convicted of a drink driving offence.
In second place was Wales with one in every 232 policies bought by a driver previously convicted of drink driving, followed by The East Midlands (253), South West (276), and North West (286).
By contrast, Greater London was found to have the lowest proportion of drink drivers (434), followed by Scotland (412) and Northern Ireland (373).
In terms of individual cities, Nottingham (191), Cardiff (199) and Leicester (247) had the highest proportion of drink drivers among policyholders, with London (585) again reporting the lowest proportion.
Drink driving consequences
Tom Banks, motoring expert at Go.Compare car insurance, said: “Drink driving is obviously one of the most dangerous decisions you can make as a motorist, yet thousands do so every year. As well as putting your own and other road users’ safety at risk, drink driving can have multiple long-term consequences, from higher car insurance premiums to losing your licence or even being given jail time.
“Based on our figures, the issue is more prominent in certain places, with motorists in the North East appearing to be especially at risk of encountering these dangerous drivers.”
