SORN supercars up 17% as new trend emerges

New research has revealed a sharp rise in the number of SORN supercars, with sales increasing but a third of owners opting to keep their cars in the garage.

Analysis of over 2,000 supercar models across five leading brands from 2022 to 2025 carried out by Approved Motor Finance and published in its Supercar Market Report has revealed that 33% are officially registered as off-road (SORN).

This is up by 17% on just three years ago, with factors such as value preservation and rising costs persuading owners to keep their cars off the road.

Lotus and Ferrari owners are the most likely to keep their cars in the garage with SORN rates peaking above 60-70% between 2023 and 2024. McLaren and Lamborghini drivers also show a steady shift towards storage, while Aston Martin models remain the UK’s most-driven supercars.

Significant shift

Commercial director of Approved Finance Group, Mark Kozo said: “We’re witnessing a significant shift in the supercar market, with the number of registrations continuing to rise and interest in high-performance vehicles showing no signs of slowing down.

“However, not all are purchasing for the thrill of driving, with many desiring the vehicles as long-term assets that represent heritage and status. Many of these vehicles are now being carefully maintained off-road, preserved as part of growing private collections.

“It will be fascinating to see whether this momentum continues and how it reshapes the definition of supercar ownership in the years ahead.”
