Public charging network up by 18% in a year

The UK public charging network for electric vehicles has grown by 18% in the last year, according to new data from Zapmap.

It has reported that there were around 73,000 public charge points this time last year. That is up from 28,460 at the end of 2021 and 53,865 at the end of 2023.

Continued investment has seen the number increase by 13,469 electric vehicle charging points in the last 12 months to 87,168, across 44,326 charging locations with a combined 121,364 connectors.

This increase is slightly down on the 19,834 charge points added to the UK public network in 2024 and the 16,602 added in 2023.

Geographically, Greater London has the most EV charging points with 27,430, followed by the South East with 11,051 and West Midlands with 7,781.

Across the whole network, rapid and ultra-rapid chargers make up around 20% of total devices but deliver around 60% of the total capacity, with the majority of new charge points installed low powered devices under 8kW.

Meanwhile, 370 new charging devices were added to the Zapmap database last month.
