New EU car registrations down 7.4%
New EU car registrations rose by 0.7% in July compared to the same month last year but year-to-date sales remain 7.4% down.
Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) also found that electric vehicles have accounted for 15.6% of all sales so far in 2025, with 1,011,903 units sold. This is up from 12.5% recorded until July 2024, which represents a notable rise of 39.1%.
Meanwhile, hybrid car registrations have continued to surge and made up 34.7% of the market from January to July. Total hybrid sales were recorded at 2,255,080 units, with growth driven by mature markets in France (30.5%), Spain (30.2%), Germany (10.7%), and Italy (9.4%).
In contrast, the popularity of petrol and diesel models has continued to decline. Petrol sales were down by 20.1% to 1,834,375 units sold, which represents 28.3% of the market, while diesel sales fell by 26.4% to account for just 9.5% of the overall market.
Between them, petrol and diesel models made up 37.7% of all sales during the first seven months of 2025, down from 47.9% last year.
