More models approved for Electric Car Grant

A further 13 models will be available as part of the government’s new Electric Car Grant scheme.

The government launched the grant last month, offering private buyers discounts of up to £3,750 on electric cars valued up to £37,000.

Backed by a £650m funding package, the new scheme could see private buyers receive grants of up to £3,750 when buying a new electric car.

Grants are based on the green credentials of each vehicle, with models from Citroen, Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall now eligible for the scheme and more expected to be approved in the coming weeks.

Further discounts

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “With discounts on 17 car models announced this week alone, we’re delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric.

“This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people’s pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward, delivering on our Plan for Change.”

Meanwhile, RAC head of policy Simon Williams added: “Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government’s revamped Electric Car Grant is yet more welcome news.

“It’s also very positive to see other manufacturers that don’t meet the grant’s green production targets lowering their prices. Those looking to make the switch now have a wider choice of better value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring.”

The 13 models now approved for grants of £1,500 are: Alpine A290; Renault Megane E-Tech; Renault 4 E-Tech; Renault 5 E-Tech; Renault Scenic E-Tech; Nissan Micra; Nissan Ariya; Vauxhall Corsa Electric; Vauxhall Combo Life Electric; Vauxhall Astra Electric; Vauxhall Mokka Electric; Vauxhall Frontera Electric; and Vauxhall Grandland Electric.
