MIB supports crackdown on uninsured drivers
A major operation against uninsured drivers has led to 27 vehicles being seized across Birmingham.
West Midlands Police joined forces with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to crack down on uninsured drivers in recognised hotspots such as Washwood Health and Hockley.
Operation Scalis was launched as MIB data revealed that Birmingham remains one of the UK’s hardest-hit cities for uninsured driving.
Across the UK uninsured driving numbers have fallen from around two million in 2005 to around one million in 2020, but rates in Birmingham remain nearly double those in London and 30% higher than in Manchester.
Meanwhile, data has revealed that someone becomes a victim of an uninsured or hit-and-run driver every 20 minutes, which equates to more than 26,000 people each year. This costs the UK an average of £2.4bn every year and adds around £50 to average annual premiums.
The penalties for driving without insurance is £300 and six points. Authorities may also seize and destroy the vehicle.
