High earners make up majority of electric car buyers

Analysis of Arnold Clark sales data has revealed that higher earners made up the majority of its electric car buyers in 2024.

This is despite a levelling off of electric car prices, bringing them closer in line with petrol and diesel equivalents.

Arnold Clark found that managers and directors accounted for 17% of all the company’s electric car customers last year, followed by teachers (five per cent), nurses, police officers and engineers (three per cent). It suggested this is being driven by employer policies and access to salary sacrifice schemes and workplace charging infrastructure.

The data also revealed a stark regional divide, with nearly a quarter of electric car sales in the south of England.

Meanwhile, just four per cent of sales came from the north west of Scotland, with only 34,354 electric vehicles registered in Scotland as of March 2024. This accounts for just 1.4% of the country’s privately owned car parc.

The average age of an electric car buyer was recorded at 46, slightly older than buyers of petrol and diesel models (44 years of age).
