Green NCAP awards two top Sustainability Ratings

Green NCAP has awarded two models the highest Sustainability Rating based on their environmental impact throughout their whole life cycles.

Set up to assess new vehicles on their sustainability and environmental credentials from manufacture to end-of-life, Green NCAP tested 12 new popular cars and awarded top ratings to the Mini Cooper E and Fiat 600e.

The Mini Cooper E was awarded five stars with a score of 97% while the Fiat 600e scored 96%.

The Citroen e-C3 also claimed five stars with a 91% sustainability score.

Meanwhile, the Volvo EX30 achieved 4.5 stars with 89%, the petrol-powered Hyundai i20 was awarded 3.5 stars with 60%, while the BMW 1 Series scored 59%.

Further down the rankings, the Kia EV9 was given three stars and 56% and the diesel-powered Mazda CX-80 got just two stars with 34%.

Dr Aleksandar Damyanov, technical manager, Green NCAP, said: “As the need to tackle global warming becomes more pressing, so too does the need to decarbonise road-based transport. But, historically, it has been difficult for drivers to get a full and independent picture of a vehicle’s true environmental impact over its lifetime.

“Green NCAP is concerned that consumers might be unknowingly ‘eco posturing’ – driving vehicles that have more of an impact on the planet than they think.”

Damyanov continued: “Green NCAP is addressing this by providing the most comprehensive and updated overview of a car’s carbon footprint, and showing how emissions, performance, and suitability can vary according to where and how it is made, just as much as the driving conditions.

“In much the same way that Euro NCAP has empowered consumers and transformed the safety of our cars for the better, we believe that Green NCAP can be both a helpful resource and a platform for driving sustainability improvements across the automotive industry.”
