Fleet operators set for annual savings of £203m
Preventative maintenance of vehicles could save fleet operators an estimated £203m a year, according to new research.
Logistics UK carries out thousands of inspections each year of HGVs, LCVs, and public service vehicles.
Analysing over 40,000 vehicle inspections carried out between April 2024 and March 2025, it found that each inspection where at least one defect was identified saved the operator an average of £545 in unplanned repairs and downtime.
With almost 60% of HGVs inspections identifying at least one defect per vehicle, it estimates the potential saving to UK HGV operators at £203m a year.
Business case
Chris Lipscomb, director of operations at Logistics UK, said: “Defects identified during an inspection can range from blown bulbs to more serious steering and braking defects, but they all have the potential to cause disruption if they need to be remedied when a vehicle should be operational.
“Operators are aware of their legal responsibilities regarding preventative maintenance, but the potential savings our research identifies show there is also a financial business case for operating safe and roadworthy vehicles.”
