Electric vehicle sales up by 39% in 2025

An increase in electric vehicle sales helped new car registrations in Europe rise by 1.4% in the first 10 months of the year.

According to new data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), electric vehicles made up 16.4% of all new sales up until October, up from 13.2% last year.

In total, 1,473,447 new electric cars were sold, which represents a rise of 38.6% on last year’s figures.

Meanwhile, hybrids retained its position as the most popular fuel type. Sales rose 9.4% on last year to 3,109,362 registrations, to account for 34.6% of all new car sales.

The data also revealed that demand for plug-in hybrids is continuing to grow rapidly, with 819,201 sales making up 9.1% of the new car market. This is up from up 43.2% on 2024.

Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars has continued to decline, down from 46.3% last year to 36.6%.

By the end of October, petrol registrations were down by 18.3% to 2,459,151 units and a 27.4% market share, while the diesel market fell by 24.5% to a 9.2% share of the market.
