Electric vehicle development project to create 150 jobs

A new electric vehicle development project will create more than 150 jobs in Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.

The project is being led by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and is the result of a new UK-Germany collaboration.

Alongside more than 150 new jobs, a further 34 high-value positions will be secured as a result of the initiative.

Called IGNITED, its aim is to develop an ‘ultra-compact, high-power electric drive system’ for high-performance electric vehicles, with production expected within three years.

The government is backing the project with a £10m investment through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, which has been set up to support the development of cutting-edge zero emission vehicle technologies, while other UK partners include YASA and DePe Gear Company.

Driving innovation

Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle said: “This investment demonstrates the strength of our partnership with Germany in driving innovation and creating good jobs across our communities. By keeping advanced manufacturing expertise here in the UK, we’re building the supply chains and skills that will power our auto industry for decades to come.

“With our modern Industrial Strategy we’re sending a clear message to the car sector that we have their back if they want to invest, as we deliver on our Plan for Change to create opportunities in every corner of the country.”
