Drivers call for car tax system reform
Nearly a quarter of drivers believe the car tax system is unfair, with almost a third believing it should be based on annual mileage.
A survey of 2,000 drivers commissioned by temporary car insurance experts Tempcover found that 22% of UK drivers do not believe car tax calculations are fair in their current form, with 29% supporting the idea that drivers who used the road more should pay more.
Meanwhile, 18% of respondents believe vehicle tax should be based on emissions, with 87% of this number agreeing that higher emissions should equal higher tax, and 14% think everyone should pay a flat fee regardless of vehicle.
Among other findings, 45% of drivers who believe tax should be based on vehicle age agreed that owners of newer vehicles should pay more while 34% said those with older vehicles should pay more.
Further, those who support a tax system based on vehicle type believe diesel vehicle owners should pay the most (43%). Nineteen per cent backed electric vehicle drivers paying more and 16% thought petrol owners should face higher car tax.
Vehicle tax
Claire Willis-Mckissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover said: “Our research suggests that there is a strong driver preference for paying for vehicle tax based on how much you use your car. Temporary car insurance works on the same principle, you only pay for the hours or days you actually drive.
“It’s a flexible way to stay covered, and it taps into the growing appetite among motorists for pay-as-you-go solutions, whether for tax or insurance.”
