Dealerships in Ireland accused of misleading customers

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has warned dealerships in Ireland against pressuring motorists not to use independent repairers.

It has been reported that in an attempt to steer customers to their own network, some dealers have even told drivers that using an independent repairer could void the vehicle’s warranty.

The CCPC has warned dealers that giving customers misleading information or restricting access to essential diagnostic tools may breach competition law, and it committed to taking enforcement action where this is identified.

It is now encouraging independent repairers in Ireland to report any anti-competitive restrictions to its antitrust unit.

Important step

The news has been welcomed by Garage Services Online (GSO), a digital lead generation service for independent garages.

Jim Lang, managing director, said: “This is an important step in protecting the long-term future of independent garages. From the conversations we’ve had with garage owners across the UK and Ireland, it’s clear that independents have faced a steady stream of pressure from main dealers trying to steer customers back to their networks.

“In many cases, it’s been done under the misleading claim that using an independent garage could void the vehicle’s warranty.”

Garage Services Online works with independents to help them raise their profile online.
