Crash for cash fraudsters focus on London

New research has shown that there is more than double the number of crash for cash scams in London than anywhere else in the UK.

Crash for cash fraud is when a driver deliberately causes a collision in order to claim insurance compensation.

According to a study of more than 2,000 people carried out by car insurance provider Prima, 25% of Londoners know someone who is a victim of the fraud or have been a victim themselves.

This compares to an average of 12% in the rest of UK.

Prima said this proves crash for cash scammers are targeting dense urban areas where collisions are more frequent and harder to verify.

Fraud protection

Despite this, only 30% of drivers have dashcams which can help protect motorists from fraud by providing evidence to insurers of the nature of incidents.

Morad Benmoussa, head of customer care UK at Prima, said: “Crash for cash scams remain a serious threat to drivers across the UK, especially in cities like London.

“At Prima, we’re dedicated to empowering our customers with the knowledge they need to protect themselves, through proactive steps like installing a dashcam and clear guidance on how to act if they fall victim. With the right awareness and tools, our customers can take control and stay one step ahead.”
