Commuting to work increasing for a fifth of workers

A new survey has revealed that 21% of UK employees are commuting to work more often now than this time last year.

The survey also found that 14% said their commute is longer this year than it was in 2024.

According to Enterprise Mobility’s second annual ‘On the Move’ mobility survey, the average commute has increased by 14 minutes in the last year, with nine per cent of employees saying their commute has increased by more than an hour.

Meanwhile, those who commute are spending an average of £507 more on getting to and from work than they were in 2024, but further research from the RAC found that 40% said they did not have a viable alternative.

Less than a third (31%) said taking the bus to work was a practical option, with that figure falling to 26% for those living in the suburbs and 11% for those living in rural locations.

The survey also revealed that 24% of those surveyed said they wanted a less stressful journey to work, with 91% of motorists who have been in an autonomous vehicle in favour of the technology and 46% believing it would give them more ‘me time’ during their commute.
