66 uninsured vehicles seized in West Midlands
A major operation in the West Midlands saw 66 uninsured vehicles seized in a single day.
The operation was launched after data from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau revealed that a third of the top 15 uninsured hotspots in the UK were in the West Midlands.
Nine local policing areas joined forces with MIB to form a ‘ring of steel’ around Birmingham, Walsall, Dudley, Solihull, Sandwell, Coventry and Wolverhampton on 26 November.
Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with MIB’s Navigate database, which holds details of all live motor insurance policies, uninsured vehicles were identified instantly and removed from the roads.
Making roads safer
Martin Saunders, head of uninsured driving prevention at MIB, said: “Uninsured driving puts lives at risk and costs the UK economy significantly. Some drivers knowingly break the law, while others fall uninsured through simple mistakes like missed payments or failed renewals. These operations show the importance of combining enforcement and awareness, holding offenders to account while helping others correct errors.
“By working with West Midlands Police, we’re making roads safer, disrupting criminal activity, and striving to ensure no well-meaning driver ends up uninsured.”
Serious risk
Chief Inspector Keeley Bevington from our Roads Policing Unit, added: “Driving without insurance is a serious risk to everyone on the road. If you choose to break the law, you’re not only endangering lives but also jeopardising your own future.
“Our officers are working around the clock, every single day, to identify uninsured drivers and take action. We will find you, we will seize your vehicle, and we will prosecute. The message is simple: stay insured, drive responsibly, and help us keep our roads safe.”
Uninsured driving is estimated to cost the UK economy £1bn every year.
