130 electric vehicle models now available

New research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has found that there are now 130 electric vehicle models available to UK car buyers.

This is up from 102 variations last year.

Motorists also have more than 100 plug-in hybrids and nearly 50 hybrids to choose from.

This means that four out of five car models are now available with electrified powertrains.

Meanwhile, average range for electric vehicles has increased from 235 miles on a single charge last year to nearly 300 miles in 2025. The average plug-in hybrid electric-only range is just under 50 miles, while the newest hybrids are now able to travel in electric mode at low speeds.

New car sales

Electrified models now make up 45% of UK new car sales, with pure electrics holding a 20.4% share of the UK new car market, up from 16.9% a year ago. However, this remains well short of the mandated government target of 28% this year.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “There’s never been a better time to go electric – with more choice, better vehicle range and improving infrastructure offering a compelling driving proposition.

“But the market still isn’t moving fast enough so bold support for consumer EV uptake – notably investment in incentives and infrastructure – is needed to accelerate decarbonisation efforts and make switching open to all drivers.”
