Christmas congestion set to surge

UK road traffic is set to surge in the coming days as drivers hit the roads to visit friends and family for Christmas.

New research from Autoglass found that seven in 10 (68%) UK drivers intend to make a road trip of more than an hour this winter, with only 31% of these having made the same journey last year when Covid 19 restrictions meant many people couldn’t travel to spend Christmas with loved ones.

Over half of drivers (54%) are planning a trip of two hours or more this winter and nearly one in 10 (nine per cent) will be heading to a holiday destination in the UK.

Neil Atherton, sales and marketing director, Autoglass, said: “People all around the UK will be looking forward to driving home for Christmas this year, but what they might be less enthusiastic about is the heavy traffic that will stand in their way. Due to the restrictions over the last couple of years, many drivers have not taken long car journeys in the winter for some time and should therefore take particular care when on these journeys, especially in cold and icy conditions.

“It is important that people check their vehicle is ready for a long drive this Christmas by checking the tyres, ensuring the wipers are operating correctly and making sure any chips in the windscreen are repaired by a specialist before setting off, the last thing anyone wants is a cracked windscreen.”
