ULEZ comes into force today

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) comes into force today. It is regarded as one of the world’s toughest vehicle emissions standards.

Drivers of older, more polluting cars face paying a new £12.50 fee to enter the centre of the capital, while diesel cars must be less than roughly four years old to avoid the charge, while petrol cars must be less than about 13 years old.

Charges apply at all times and are on top of the congestion charge, which is £11.50 between 7am and 6pm on weekdays. All vehicle types apart from black taxis are liable for the Ulez charge unless they meet certain emissions standards or exemptions.

Non-compliant lorries, buses and coaches face a £100 daily fee.

BVRLA has urged fleet operators to consider ways of overcoming these costs. Chief executive, Gerry Keaney, said, ‘Businesses across London are upgrading their fleets to comply with the new ULEZ, but it is clear that many smaller firms are still unaware of the zone or are struggling to afford the switch to expensive new low emission vans and trucks.

‘It is vital that these companies assess their potential ULEZ costs and work out if they are eligible for any of the discounts, exemptions or scrappage schemes that are available.

‘In many cases, they will be able to manage their costs better by leasing or hiring a compliant car, van or truck. BVRLA members have more than 100 branches and depots within the Greater London area, as well as thousands of car club cars and vans strategically located on streets across the capital.’

The ULEZ zone will grow to cover the entire area within the North and South Circular in 2021, with a zero emission zone on the cards for 2025.
