Electric vehicles set pace in new car sales

New car sales rose by 10.4% in Europe in September, according to the latest data from JATO Dynamics.

New registrations rose to 1.36 million units, while electric vehicle sales rose 60% year-on-year to 415,157 units, accounting for 30.5% of all sales.

Meanwhile, plug in hybrid sales rose by 25.3% to 165,741 units, hybrid sales were up 7.6% to 177,764 units, and mild hybrids rose 1.7% to 285,201 registrations.

In terms of models, the Tesla Model Y was the most popular with 41,588 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 27,132 units. Chinese-owned brands also continued to gain momentum, recording 72,034 registrations, which is up 76% year-on-year.

Conversely, registrations of petrol and diesel models fell by 20% to 302,196 units, with their market share down to just 22.2%.

Steffen Michulski, regional consultant Europe at JATO Dynamics, said: “September left little room for debate: Europe’s market is now running on electric momentum. BEVs didn’t just grow, they smashed through the 30% share barrier while combustion slipped further into retreat. The race is no longer about convincing buyers to go electric; it’s about who can win them over once they’re there.”
