Demand for used electric cars up nearly 50%
Searches for used electric cars on AA Cars rose 49.6% in September compared to the same month in 2025.
This follows a 37% year-on-year increase recorded in August, according to the latest AA Used Car Index.
Meanwhile, the 10 most searched-for used electrics averaged four years old in the third quarter compared to 7.7 years old for the most popular petrol and diesel models, with the average price for a used electric vehicle at £18,633.
In terms of models, the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 and Renault Zoe remained the three most searched-for electric cars.
James Hosking, managing director of AA Cars, said: “Used electric cars are becoming an increasingly attractive option for motorists, with greater choice, more competitive prices and rising petrol and diesel costs giving drivers fresh reasons to consider making the switch. For buyers looking for a relatively modern car without the price tag of a brand-new model, the used EV market now offers some compelling options.
“Cost has traditionally been one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership, but the used market has evolved significantly. With a growing range of models available at different price points, buyers can increasingly compare electric cars with their petrol and diesel equivalents on age, condition and overall value, rather than assuming that going electric means paying a premium.
“Of course, the purchase price is only part of the equation. For drivers who can charge at home, an EV can offer significant savings on running costs compared with petrol or diesel.”
