Recommended car repairs put on the backburner

More than a third of drivers have delayed recommended car repairs this year to save money.

According to FixMyCar’s annual Making Tracks: The Auto Repair Report, 34% of motorists have put off vehicle repairs with 72% admitting they did so in an effort to cut bills.

The data, based on booking and quote data from the FixMyCar network plus a survey of 2,000 UK drivers, also found that 60% of drivers say they’ve used an AI tool for a car-related task in the past 12 months, with 25% using AI to try to work out what’s wrong with their car, 20% using it to help understand a garage quote, and 15% using it to find a DIY repair guide.

This comes as the average quoted price for all repairs and maintenance on FixMyCar rose by eight per cent over the past 12 months to £193.84, although repair costs for electric vehicles and hybrids – which grew 12.7% year-on-year by volume – rose just 5.7% to £110.06 over the past year.

The report also revealed that clutch replacements are seven per cent across every major vehicle brand while engine replacement is the highest-value job in the network at an average price of £1,455.
