Autotrader calls for ZEV Mandate clarity

Autotrader has urged the government to retain its 2030 and 2030 ZEV Mandate deadlines, but said short-term flexibility could help manufacturers.

The government is set to conclude its ZEV Mandate consultation this week, with Autotrader restating its support for maintaining the current phase-out dates of new petrol and diesel sales.

It believes this regulatory clarity is critical to the industry and will support continued growth in the new car market. New car sales are expected to rise to 2.21 million units this year, according to Autotrader’s revised forecast.

This is 9.5% higher than last year, while demand in electric vehicles is being driven upwards by high fuel prices, with electric cars accounting for more than a third (33.8%) of all new car enquiries on Autotrader for the first time in October.

Bex Kennett, head of new car at Autotrader, said: “The fact that consumer engagement has held firm immediately after such a strong September plate change is an encouraging sign of genuine momentum heading into the closing months of the year.

“However, maintaining this trajectory requires a balanced regulatory approach. Long-term clarity through the 2030 and 2035 phase-out dates remain vital for industry investment, but the significant increases required in the intervening years will become increasingly challenging against the current economic and geopolitical backdrop.

“Pragmatic flexibility in the near-term ZEV Mandate trajectory would help manufacturers remain on course, while continuing to deliver meaningful reductions in carbon emissions from road transport.”
