Electric vehicle costs remain key concern for buyers

The latest EV Barometer1 from Europcar Mobility Group UK has revealed that private motorists regard electric vehicle costs as the biggest barrier to switching.

It found that in September 60.5% of respondents cited cost as a barrier, the same percentage as September 2025.

However, concerns about charging infrastructure fell from 44.7% in September 2025 to 39.9% September 2026. Meanwhile, from January to September, 42.1% of drivers cited charging infrastructure as a barrier compared to 43.5% in the same period in 2025 and 46.5% in 2024.

Tom Middleditch, sustainability spokesperson at Europcar, said: “It’s encouraging to see charging concerns are beginning to ease, but it seems cost continues to hold many drivers back.

“For private motorists considering electric vehicles, understanding how an EV fits into their day-to-day life matters as much as the headline vehicle cost. Trying one through rental can help drivers assess charging, range and practicality for themselves.”
