Graduated driving licences set for Northern Ireland launch
Graduated driving licences will be introduced in Northern Ireland from 1 October to improve road safety for new drivers.
They will apply to learner drivers and newly qualified drivers aged 17 to 24.
Under new rules, learner drivers will have a Mandatory Minimum Learning Period (MMLP) of six months before testing.
Meanwhile, newly qualified drivers will be required to display an R plate for two years and will only be allowed one passenger aged 14 to 20 between 11pm and 6am for the first six months after passing their test.
IAM RoadSmart road safety manager Bruce Steele said: “The introduction of graduated driver licensing in Northern Ireland represents an important step towards making our roads safer and, most importantly, preventing the loss of life.
“Every person killed or seriously injured on our roads is a tragedy for their family, friends and community. These reforms are about giving new drivers the time, experience and support they need to develop safer habits and reduce the risk of serious collisions.”
