NFDA urges government to lower ZEV Mandate targets
The National Franchised Dealer Association has called on the government to set 2030 ZEV Mandate targets of 50-60% and 40% for zero emissions cars and vans.
In its response to the government’s consultation on the ZEV Mandate, it argues that these lower targets would better reflect customer demand.
As it stands, the ZEV Mandate stipulates that 80% of new cars sold by 2030 must be zero emission and 70% of new vans.
Zero-emission cars accounted for 25.5% of all new car sales between January and August this year, while electric vans accounted for just 11% of new sales.
Sue Robinson, NFDA chief executive, said: “Franchised dealers are committed to supporting the transition to zero emission vehicles, but the targets need to reflect what customers are actually ready and able to buy.
“A more realistic trajectory would give demand, charging infrastructure and vehicle choice time to develop, while maintaining progress towards the Government’s longer-term ambitions.”
The consultation closes on October 23, 2026.
