UK used electric vehicle market nears US size
The UK’s used electric vehicle market is nearly as big as the US market, according to new analysis from MarketCheck.
The used vehicle data provider found that 197,653 used electric vehicles were sold in the UK between January and July 2026 compared with 288,350 in the US over the same period.
This is despite the UK having a population of around 70 million people compared to more than 340 million in the US.
The UK market peaked in April with 34,932 used electric vehicles sales, before it fell back to 27,370 sales in July. Meanwhile, 55,596 used electric vehicles were sold in the US in April and 37,866 in July.
Alastair Campbell, MarketCheck UK, said: “The standout finding is just how closely the UK market is tracking the US. When you compare the size of the two countries, you would expect the gap in used electric vehicle sales to be significantly larger. Instead, we’re seeing the UK achieve almost 70% of US used electric vehicle sales volumes despite having a much smaller population and a much smaller overall automotive market.
“That suggests used electric vehicle adoption in the UK is accelerating rapidly and that electric vehicles are becoming firmly established within the mainstream used car market.”
