A third of tradespeople on the verge of quitting
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has reported that nearly a third of tradespeople in the UK are considering quitting their jobs because of the long hours.
Its research revealed that the average tradesperson now works 9.44 hours a day, which is nearly 10% more than the 8.59-hour average in 2022.
Across a year, this adds up to almost one extra month of working.
The heavier workload is taking the greatest toll on 18- to 24-year-olds, with 45% saying they are on the verge of quitting, 44% saying they regularly stress about their work/life balance and 39% concerned about constant overworking.
Longer days
Richard Welch, technical training and development manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “UK tradespeople are facing challenges from all angles, having to work longer days than ever before to survive, the industry is at breaking point.
“At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, we are dedicated to providing vehicles and services that reduce the burden by being reliable business partners to drivers through those long, hard days.”
