Drivers warned against common car insurance misconception

More than half of UK motorists could be invalidating their car insurance by not stating the correct main driver on their policy.

A survey carried out by Quotezone revealed that 56% of respondents listed the person who pays for the insurance as the main driver. Often this is an older and experienced driver who is offered lower insurance premiums.

However, Quotezone has pointed out that the listed main driver must be the person who drives the car most often regardless of who pays for the policy.

Failing to list the right driver to save on premiums is known as fronting and considered insurance fraud.

Fronting

Greg Wilson, CEO at Quotezone.co.uk said: “One of the most common types of fronting is where a more experienced driver is declared as the main driver, to help reduce costs for younger, more inexperienced motorists. While it may seem like a harmless way to save money, it is actually considered fraud and can have serious consequences.

“An insurer could refuse a claim, cancel the policy altogether, and even report the offence as fraud, especially if a policyholder is found to have deliberately misrepresented who the main driver is.”
