Common causes of used car breakdowns revealed
Automotive diagnostics specialist Carly has identified the five most common causes of used car breakdowns.
Longer journeys, hotter weather and heavier loads all put additional pressure on vehicles which can turn minor issues into expensive repairs.
Analysis from Carly has revealed that the most common cause of a breakdown in the summer months in the battery, with heat accelerating ageing and evaporation of the internal fluid likely to cause complete failure. It estimates repair costs at between £80 and £260.
Meanwhile, low coolant levels, a faulty radiator or a failing water pump can all cause the engine to overheat, resulting in a repair bill anywhere from £60 to £700. A faulty air conditioning system is another common issue in summer, caused by gas leaks, a failed compressor or an overheated condenser, with repairs up to £1,040.
Tyre blowouts are also a summer risk for motorists as the hot weather increases tyre pressure, while heat can also reduce the viscosity of engine oil, leading to faults with the engine or gearbox – and repair bills over £3,000.
