Unite warns that ZEV Mandate puts jobs at risk

The Unite union has warned that current ZEV Mandate targets are putting automotive jobs in the UK at risk.

It believes existing targets are fundamentally flawed and called on the government to adjust them in line with customer demand.

The ZEV Mandate stipulates that electric vehicles must make up a rising percentage of new car sales, with automotive manufactures facing fines for every vehicle sold outside those targets.

Unite fears that manufacturers will reduce production of petrol and diesel vehicles rather than risk fines, which could put jobs at risk.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The current ZEV mandate is significantly contributing to the loss of automotive jobs in Britain. This is a clear fact. The targets must be radically reduced.

“The automotive industry is a jewel in the crown of UK manufacturing. Of which thousands of jobs depend.  If the government sits on its hands it will be responsible for the decimation of the automotive industry.”
