Viral sensations set for UK Garage & Bodyshop Event
The UK Garage & Bodyshop Event has announced that viral sensations Gary and Ben will appear at this year’s show.
The father and son team, which will appear at the event taking place at the NEC in June, captured the imagination of the country by documenting a Mini restoration project that began when Ben was just 10 years old.
The challenge was to restore the classic Mini in time for Ben to drive it to his school prom.
The project was initially intended to develop real-world skills and reduce screen time, but has since turned into a profound story of learning, patience and shared passions.
Ben, now 12, said: “I’ve learnt welding, grinding, how to strip my first ever engine, replacing panels, and it’s thanks to my dad. I’m just lucky.”
New skills
Gary added: “All the kids these days all are computer-based. There are very few with practical skills now. This has brought us together; I’ve had to learn patience and Ben’s had to learn the skills.”
Joanne Knowles, event director at Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, said: “Ben and Gary’s story is incredibly inspiring and highlights exactly why it’s so important to engage the next generation with hands-on skills.
“Their journey shows what can be achieved with the right support, encouragement and passion, and we’re delighted to welcome them to this year’s event.”
The UK Garage and Bodyshop Event takes place at the NEC from 3-4 June.
