Electric vehicles dominate fastest-selling list

Electric vehicles have been selling at record speeds in October, with the list of fastest-selling models dominated by electric powertrains.

Data from Auto Trader has revealed that the Tesla Model Y, aged three to five years old, was the fastest selling car in October, taking just 11 days on average to find a buyer.

This compares to a used car market average of 27 days, which is two days quicker than the same month in 2024.

Meanwhile, used electric cars have sold in an average of 23 days so far this month, making them the most popular fuel type on the platform. Those in the three to five-year category have been in even more demand, with average selling times of 19 days.

The data also found that the top four fastest-selling models in October were all electric, with eight of the top 10 alternatively fuelled vehicles.

Consumer confidence

Marc Palmer, Autotrader head of strategy and insights, said: “The data tells us one thing loud and clear: consumer confidence in used EVs is growing fast, with electric models consistently selling faster than any other fuel type. Buyers have clearly found their sweet spot in the three- to five-year-old segment where pricing and value make them a hugely compelling option.

“Given it’s still a new frontier for many retailers, some trepidation in selling EVs is understandable, but the rapidly expanding size of the market and the indisputable levels of consumer demand make them a very strong opportunity, especially within middle-aged cohorts, where given the choice, consumers are choosing electric.”
