Electric vehicle sales surpass diesels

Online used car retailer cinch has revealed that used electric vehicle sales exceeded sales of used diesel vehicles last month.

Its data revealed that electric vehicles made up 16% of its total sales in August, compared to 13% for diesels.

These figures highlight a significant shift in consumer attitudes over the past 12 months, with electric vehicles accounting for just 10% of all used car sales in August 2024 while diesels made up 19% of total sales 12 months ago.

Abhishek Sampat, head of electric vehicles at cinch, said: “EVs used to be a relatively niche choice in the used car market, but not anymore. One in every six cars we sell is now an EV, and the uptake is growing each month.

“We sold 66 different EV models in August, up from 47 during the same period in 2024. The variety of vehicles now available, from family-friendly SUVs to small, affordable hatchbacks,  is being driven by consumer demand.”
