Car output on the wane

British manufacturing fell for the 14th month in a row in July, declining 10.6% to 108,239 units.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that exports fell 14.6% as international demand continues to fall. Eight out of every 10 vehicles produced in this country is exported.

These figures continue a negative trend for the year, with manufacturing 18.9% down on last year. Exports are responsible for the fall in output, with overseas shipments down 20.2%.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said, ‘Another month of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern. The sector is overwhelmingly reliant on exports and the global headwinds are strong, with escalating trade tensions, softening demand and significant technological change.’
