A ‘huge boost’ to UK motor industry

The SMMT has described JLR’s decision to develop its electric vehicles in the UK as a ‘huge boost’.

JLR confirmed on Friday that it would invest hundreds of millions of pounds at its Castle Bromwich plant to manufacture a range of EV models, beginning with the Jaguar XJ.

The decision safeguards about 2,700 jobs.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said, ‘[This] news is a huge boost for the UK motor industry and reaffirms Britain’s potential to become a global leader in zero emission technologies. To realise this, however, we need the right conditions to encourage more manufacturers to invest, innovate and sell competitively, including massive infrastructure investment and long-term support and incentives for consumers. When it comes to automotive supply, distance matters and securing significant giga-scale battery production here in the UK will be essential to future-proof this sector. ‘
